Duane's take
Here's my tellin' of what the official marker has to say about this place. Now, there are homes, and then there are homes. The kind a man builds with his own two hands, from materials he pulled out of the very ground he stands on.
The A. B. Medlan home is that second kind.
Medlan settled this farm in 1855, and when it came time to build, he didn't go looking far for his materials. The brick in those walls was made right here, on this farm. Think about that for a moment.
The land itself became the house. A. B.
Medlan was a Texas Ranger, a church leader, a builder, treasurer of Young County, and commissioner of Young County. That is a man who did not sit still. He ranged, he organized, he led, he served, and he built, sometimes literally.
And what he built is still standing in Young County, recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1964. Made from the ground up. Every last brick of it.
What the marker says
