Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in the rural Sand Flat community of Smith County, there's a congregation with roots that go deep, deeper than most. According to the records of the Smith County Baptist Association, Antioch Baptist Church was established in 1851.
Now, in those early days, they didn't have a grand building to gather in. They had something better, maybe. They had each other.
Members held their worship services in homes, in the local schoolhouse, wherever there was room enough for faith and fellowship. It wasn't until 1857 that they built their first sanctuary. Their own place.
That had to feel like something. But here's where the story gets interesting, and where you start to see what this congregation was really made of. Antioch had only part-time pastors.
That meant some Sundays, there simply was no preacher coming through the door. And you know what they did? They showed up anyway.
Sunday School classes met. The Baptist Young People's Union gathered. The work of the church carried on, with or without someone standing at the front of the room.
That tells you something about the character of those people. By 1936, things had grown enough that Antioch could claim a half-time pastor. And in 1939, they completed a new church building entirely.
Then in 1953, an education annex was added to enhance it further. Layer by layer, decade by decade, this congregation kept building, kept gathering, kept going. Antioch Baptist Church, serving the Sand Flat community, still stands today, upholding the ideals and traditions of the founders who once crowded into each other's homes and a schoolhouse, back in 1851, because they weren't about to let anything stop them.
What the marker says
Records of the Smith County Baptist Association indicate that this congregation was established in 1851. Members held worship services in homes and in the local schoolhouse until they built their first sanctuary in 1857. Since the church had only part-time pastors, Sunday School classes and the Baptist Young People's Union met on Sundays even when a preacher could not be there. By 1936, Antioch had a half-time pastor. A new church building, completed in 1939, was enhanced by an education annex in 1953. Serving the rural Sand Flat community, Antioch Baptist Church continues to uphold the ideals and traditions of its founders. (2001)
