Houston County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the marker tells it, and I'll do my right by the story. Now, most folks who roll through Crockett, Houston County, don't stop to think about the particular kind of man it takes to build a life from scratch in a place that's still finding its own edges. But every now and then a name on a marker stops you cold, and the name on this one is Armisted Thompson Mason Monroe.

Born March 15, 1818, in Virginia. Died September of 1893. And right there in the middle of that span, a whole Texas story.

He was a grandnephew of U.S. President James Monroe. Now, that kind of connection could turn a man's head, make him think his best days were behind him, inherited and borrowed.

But A.T.M. Monroe, he came to Texas in 1842. He didn't ride in on a famous name.

He rode in on his own intentions. Four years after arriving, in 1846, he married Rachel Albright, born in 1828, and she would be at the center of everything he built here. Then in 1849, he moved his family to Crockett.

Right to the courthouse square. That's not a coincidence, that's a man who understood where the action was. He set up a general store there, partnered with a fellow named W.F.

Wall, and here's the detail that really tells you something about Monroe's ambition: he made annual trips to New York for merchandise. Annual. From Crockett, Texas, to New York City, every year, to keep those shelves stocked.

He was also deep in real estate dealings, and at some point he gave land for the Episcopal Church. Rachel Albright Monroe passed in 1866. The marker carries her years, 1828 to 1866, quiet and plain.

Monroe himself kept going until September of 1893. A Virginia-born grandnephew of a president, who decided Texas was where he'd leave his mark, and left it on the courthouse square and in the very ground the church stands on.
