Victoria County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker says about Victoria's Band Stand, and it's one of those stories where the whole town's history is hiding inside something most folks walk right past. Picture a bandstand, the kind that makes a public square feel like a public square. Victoria had one of these, up and running before 1885, sitting right there on the Constitution Street side of the public square, built for gatherings and concerts.

People came, music played, the town collected itself in that way towns do around a good bandstand. Then comes 1923, and somebody decides to move it. Not out of town, not into storage, but to the very center of the public square.

And here's the detail that stops me every time: they didn't just set it down on bare ground. They placed it on the foundation of the old standpipe. That old standpipe foundation became the new footing for the bandstand, one piece of the town's past holding up another.

Now the years go by, and by 1962 the bandstand needed some serious attention. That's when Mr. and Mrs. J.M.

Pickering stepped in and completely restored it. Not patched, not painted over. Completely restored.

Two people deciding that a bandstand on a public square in Victoria, Texas was worth doing right. That's the whole story, and somehow it's enough. A structure built before 1885, moved in 1923, restored in 1962, still standing in the center of things.

Some places just refuse to leave.
