Fannin County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, Windom, Texas, around the turn of the twentieth century, was a town with ambitions. Businesses were growin, crops needed tendin, homes needed buildin, and money needed a place to live.

A group of local businessmen looked around, recognized the need, and in 1900 they did something about it. They opened the Private Bank of Windom. No grand building to start, mind you.

No marble columns, no brass fixtures. Just a corner of F.C. Council's store.

That was the bank. You'd walk in, conduct your business, maybe pick up a few dry goods on the way out. It wasn't fancy, but it was there, and in a small town, being there is everything.

Then in 1902, they built it proper. A new brick structure, right on the corner of Main and 2nd streets. Brick, now.

That's a statement. That's a town saying it intends to stick around. The name of the bank changed over the years, and the organization shifted, as banks tend to do.

But that corner, that building, stayed the only bank in Windom. The whole town's financial life, flowing through one address. By 1964, it was operating under the name Fannin National Bank.

And in 1976, it moved to a modern facility. The brick building had held the line for generations, but progress eventually called for new quarters. What doesn't change is what that institution meant to the community.

Capital for construction. Capital for agriculture. For businesses and for homes.

The Bank of Windom didn't just hold money. It helped build the town around it, one loan at a time, one generation at a time. Some things in a small Texas town are quieter than a courthouse or a church, but every bit as essential.

That corner of Main and 2nd knew it all along.

What the marker says

Recognizing a need for banking services, a group of local businessmen opened the Private Bank of Windom in 1900. Originally, the bank operated out of F.C. Council's store but relocated to a new brick structure on the corner of Main and 2nd streets in 1902. Although the name and organization of the bank changed over time, the building continued to house the only bank in Windom. In 1964, it changed its name to Fannin National Bank and in 1976 moved to a modern facility. By providing sources of capital for construction and agricultural projects, businesses, and homes, the Bank of Windom has contributed to the community's growth and prosperity for generations. (2018)
