Bastrop County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna give it to you straight. Back in 1889, two men put their names on something that would outlast just about everything else in Bastrop. D.

S. Green and P. O.

Elzner constructed the Bastrop Opera House, and from the moment it went up, this town had itself a proper stage. Now Elzner, he was a prominent local merchant, a man who clearly understood that a community needs more than goods on a shelf. By 1901, he had become the sole owner, and that building was his.

The Opera House itself is something to look at, even from the outside. A three-part facade, bays separated by pilasters, the kind of architectural intention that says whoever built this meant for it to stand. And stand it has.

Traveling opera companies came through. Drama companies took that stage. Musicians, artists of all kinds, they performed here in Bastrop.

Think about what that meant for a town. You didn't have to travel to find the world. The world came to you, right through those doors.

But here's the thing that gets me every time. That same stage that hosted opera and drama also saw graduation exercises. Also saw school proms.

The grandest night of someone's young life, and the most polished performance of a touring company, sharing the same floor, the same lights, the same walls. That's what a building becomes when a town truly claims it. The Bastrop Opera House, born in 1889, still carrying every note.
