Jasper County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. Way back in the 1850s, Baptist folks in this part of Jasper County were already gathering for worship in a building called Allen's Chapel, sitting on the homestead of an early pioneer by the name of George W. Smyth, born in 1803 and gone by 1866.

That little chapel was the seed of something that would last a long, long time. The Beech Grove community grew up northwest of Smyth's land, and by 1875 they had themselves a proper school and church building, erected right alongside the formal organization of this very church. Two things at once.

A community planting its flag. Now, if you think this story runs smooth from there, well. The building burned in 1893.

Just gone. But these were not people who quit easily. They went back to that old Allen's Chapel building, moved it, and made use of it, holding on until 1901 when a brand new sanctuary was completed at this very site.

And still the congregation kept building. Another structure went up in 1950, and another in 1968. For generations, baptisms were held right out in Sandy Creek, the way it had always been done, until 1957.

That creek saw a lot of faith over the years. What started in a pioneer's homestead chapel, survived a fire, outlasted two buildings, and kept right on going. Beech Grove Baptist Church.

Still here.

What the marker says

Baptist worship services were held as early as the 1850s in a building known as Allen's Chapel on the homestead of early pioneer George W. Smyth (1803-1866). The Beech Grove community grew up northwest of Smyth's land, and a school and church building was erected in 1875, the year this church was formally organized. The building burned in 1893, and the Allen's Chapel building was moved and used until 1901, when a new sanctuary was completed at this site. Two later structures were built, in 1950 and 1968. Baptisms were held in Sandy Creek until 1957. Texas Sesquicentennial 1836 - 1986
