Polk County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way back on January 6th, 1849, a man named Reverend J.W.D. Creath gathered settlers who'd come up from Louisiana and organized what would become Bethel Baptist Church.

That's your starting point. A cold winter's day, a new congregation, a new life being planted in Polk County, Texas. Now, the marker is honest with you about who was in that early membership, and so am I.

In those early days, the family slaves were counted among the congregation. That's a fact the marker states plainly, and it carries the full weight of what it means. This community was shaped by the world it lived in, the brutal world of antebellum Texas, and that story belongs to the telling as much as anything else.

The first church building sat in Colita, an early Polk County town, and that's where this congregation put down its roots and worshipped. But 1872 came around, and the whole church, the physical building itself, was moved. Picked up and carried to Bold Springs.

That kind of determination, that willingness to uproot and replant, says something about a people who intended to last. And last they did. The building standing today was built in 1901, nearly half a century after that January morning when Reverend Creath first called the congregation together.

From Louisiana settlers to Colita to Bold Springs, from 1849 to 1901, Bethel Baptist Church kept on. Some roots go deep enough that even moving can't shake them loose.
