Grayson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Grayson County, in a little place called the Bethel community, something quiet was taking root back in 1875. A small group of folks had started gathering, nothing fancy, just a prayer group meeting in the schoolhouse.

Same building served as the community center, so they knew the place well. They'd come together for weekly prayer and Bible study, week after week, year after year. And sometimes that's all it takes.

Sometimes a handful of determined people in a schoolhouse is the seed of something that lasts. Then comes April 16, 1884. Nine men and women sat down together with a purpose.

They were going to organize a church, and they did. The Bethel Baptist Church. The charter members were Mr. and Mrs.

J. P. Autrey, Mr. and Mrs.

B. F. Blanton, Mr. and Mrs.

J. F. Holland, Mr. and Mrs.

E. F. Jones, and Mrs.

Sarah Miller. Nine people. The Rev.

Bob Thomas stepped up as the first pastor. Now, nine charter members might not sound like much, but don't blink. That small congregation grew rapidly, and before long Bethel Baptist had more than a hundred and fifty members.

In 1897, something meaningful happened. Mr. and Mrs. J.

P. Autrey, two of those original nine, deeded the very property to the church they had helped found. That same year, during the pastorate of J.

M. Harder, the congregation put up a one-room sanctuary. Their own building.

Their own house of worship. It stood, and the people worshipped in it, until 1918, when a storm came through and damaged it. But they repaired it.

They didn't scatter, they didn't quit, they repaired it and kept right on worshipping there. Kept on until 1937, when they constructed another. Through all of it, floods of time and storms of weather, Bethel Baptist Church held its place as a focal point for that small community.

And the congregation, even now, continues to carry the ideals and traditions of those pioneer founders forward. Nine people in Grayson County in 1884. That's where it began.

What the marker says

This congregation grew from an early prayer group, established in the Bethel community in 1875. A small group met in the schoolhouse, which also served as a community center, for weekly prayer and Bible study. On April 16, 1884, nine men and women met to organize the Bethel Baptist Church. These charter members were Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Autrey, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Blanton, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Holland, Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Jones, and Mrs. Sarah Miller. The Rev. Bob Thomas served as first pastor. The small congregation grew rapidly and soon had more than 150 members. In 1897, this property was deeded to Bethel Baptist Church by Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Autrey. In the same year, during the pastorate of J. M. Harder, a one-room sanctuary was constructed. A 1918 storm damaged the building, but it was repaired and the congregation continued to worship there until another was constructed in 1937. Throughout its history, Bethel Baptist Church has served as a focal point for the small community. The congregation continues to maintain the ideals and traditions of its pioneer founders.
