Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Caldwell County. Now settle in, because some stories don't need a battle or a villain to carry weight. Some stories just need a date, a doorstep, and a handful of stubborn faithful people.
June 19, 1852. That's the day this congregation drew its first breath, right there in the home of John Fleming, near the very site where you're probably standing or rolling past right now. No church building yet.
No steeple catching the afternoon light. Just a home, and people who decided that was enough to begin. Two elders made the trip from Plum Creek Primitive Baptist Church to help get things started proper.
George Daniels and Reuben W. Ellis, called to serve as pastors by the charter members themselves. And let me read you those names, because they deserve to be said out loud: James Jeffrey, Mary Ann Jeffrey, John M.
Fleming, Abigail Fleming, Richard Cole, Sarah Cole, John B. Jeffrey, Elinder Jeffrey, Robert McFeron, and Sarah McFeron. Ten people.
Ten names on the founding roll of something that would outlast all of them by a long, long measure. Now, they worshipped without a dedicated building for a good while. It wasn't until 1901 that a church building finally went up at this site.
Nearly half a century after that first meeting in John Fleming's home, the congregation finally had four walls to call its own. And here is where the story gets quiet and strong at the same time. Bethel Primitive Baptist Church is still here.
Still ministering to McMahan and the surrounding area, just as it has been since 1852. Some things in Texas flash and fade. This one just kept going.
The marker was placed during the Texas Sesquicentennial, marking one hundred and fifty years of Texas history from 1836 to 1986. And Bethel was there for most of it.
