Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna do my best to honor every word. Now settle in, because this is the story of a man whose fingers could coax music out of just about anything you put in front of him. William McKinley Muth, Billy, to the people who loved him, was born in 1902 in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

And before most kids his age had figured out how to sit still in church, Billy Muth was the one playing the organ. Nine years old. Nine.

You can imagine the congregation exchanging glances the first Sunday he set those small hands on the keys. By the time the wider world caught up to what Billy already knew, they'd given him a title that says everything you need to know: the master of the keyboard. That wasn't a local nickname passed around Fort Worth barbershops; that was a nationally known designation, and he earned every syllable of it.

He came to Texas in 1926, and Texas, to its great fortune, held onto him. He became organist at the Worth Theatre, a musician of multiple instruments in the Fort Worth Symphony, and a church organist whose playing filled sanctuaries the way a river fills a canyon, naturally, inevitably, completely. Then came 1936, and the Texas Centennial, and Casa Manana.

If you wanted a showcase for the master of the keyboard, that was the stage. Billy Muth was there, at the keys, for all of it. But here's the thing about Billy Muth that makes the story stretch even wider: he wasn't just Texas.

As a pipe organist for Paramount/Publix Theatres, he opened theatres across the entire United States. Think about that. A man traveling from house to house, city to city, coaxing those massive pipe organs to life for the very first time, filling rooms that had never yet heard a single note.

Beyond the grand stages and the touring, Muth performed concerts, played benefits, and taught organ and music seminars all across Texas, passing the gift along to anyone who'd sit down and listen. He died in 1949. Not quite five decades on this earth, but what a sound he left behind.

William McKinley (Billy) Muth (1902-1949) made significant contributions to Texas' cultural history. Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Muth was a church organist at the age of nine.
