Bosque County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Bosque County Courthouse. Now, every county's got a courthouse story, but Bosque County's got four of them, and that's where things get interesting. It starts the way a lot of Texas stories start, humbly and in timber.

The year is 1854, and the first courthouse in Bosque County is a one-room log cabin. One room. You could fit the whole apparatus of county government in there and still have space to swing a cat, if you were so inclined.

That was courthouse number one. History doesn't linger on what happened to it, or to numbers two and three, but the marker knows where the story ends up, and that's with the building standing today. Limestone, quarried right out of the nearby hills, shaped into Gothic styling, which is a grander ambition than most folks expect from a county seat on the Texas frontier.

Gothic. Pointed arches, a clock tower, the works. Speaking of that clock tower, it got modified in 1935 to strengthen the roof, so even the repairs here have a little drama attached to them.

And then there are the iron stairs and railing inside, unique enough that the marker calls them out by name. They remain. After all of it, the one-room log cabin, the modifications, the limestone and the Gothic ambition, those iron stairs are still standing.

From a single room of logs in 1854 to a clock tower of quarried stone, Bosque County built itself up one courthouse at a time, and the fourth one decided it wasn't going anywhere.

What the marker says

Limestone quarried from nearby hills. Gothic styling. Clock tower modified, 1935, to strengthen roof. Unique iron stairs and railing remain. County's fourth courthouse. First, in 1854, was one-room log cabin. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, 1965.
