Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna give it to you straight. Now, you might expect the story of a library to be quiet, maybe a little dusty around the edges. But the Brenham Public Library, first in all of Washington County, has a story worth pulling over for.
It was founded in 1901, and here's the part that ought to stop you in your tracks: it was founded by the Fortnightly Literary Club, and that same club is still maintaining it to this day. Not handed off, not turned over, not forgotten. Still theirs.
Still tended. When they first put out the call for books, the community answered. One thousand volumes.
Just from that first ask. A thousand books showing up because somebody believed a library ought to exist here. And every bit of housing the library has ever had, donated.
Every roof over those books, given freely. Then in 1934, the city of Brenham built the library its present quarters, and the collection moved in and has been there since. County support, city support, a literary club that never let go.
That is how you build something that lasts.
What the marker says
First in county. Founded 1901 and still maintained by Fortnightly Literary Club, with county and city support. All housing has been donated. First call for books brought 1,000 volumes. In 1934 occupied present quarters built by the city. (1966)
