Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. The Buda Christian Church. Hays County.

And friend, this little building has earned its place on the map the hard way. Organized in 1893, the congregation started out borrowing space, meeting inside the Methodist church building while they figured out their next move. That patience paid off.

By 1903, they had their own house of worship, built right here on this very site. New walls, new roof, a place to call their own. Now, you'd think that would be the end of the hard part.

You would be wrong. 1909. A storm came through and destroyed the building. Just like that, gone.

But here's the thing about a congregation with roots, they don't quit. By 1912, a new structure was standing right back on that same ground. Same site, stronger resolve, new walls going up where the old ones had come down.

That 1912 building is the one you're looking at today. And it is something to look at. One story, frame construction, built with a care for craft that was meant to last.

It features elements of Italianate and classical revival styles, with a central, inset, pedimented entry, an offset tower, and a pyramidal roof. Somebody wanted this place to look like it belonged, and it does. Now, the story doesn't stay triumphant all the way through.

Membership began to decline in the 1940s, and eventually the congregation disbanded altogether. The building didn't sit idle, though. Various civic groups put it to use over the years, and in 1981 it was housing a non-denominational church.

The walls that went up in 1912 were still doing what walls are supposed to do, bringing people together. A building that outlasted the storm that took its predecessor, outlasted the congregation that built it, and just kept on standing there on this Hays County lot, useful and unhurried and still worth stopping for.
