Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Burton Cafe. Now settle in, because sometimes the most enduring stories aren't about battles or cattle drives or famous men on horseback. Sometimes they're about a place where people simply came together, day after day, decade after decade, and that turned out to be enough.

We're talking about the Burton Cafe, right there in downtown Burton, Washington County, Texas. Edward Whitener and Quintus Zwernemann built it in 1937, and from the moment it opened its doors, it became something more than a place to get a meal. It became a social center.

A gathering spot. The kind of place where generations of folks pulled up a chair and stayed a while. Now, at one point there was even a liquor store worked into the operation, which probably didn't hurt the socializing any.

The building itself has a look that rewards a second glance. That false front, with its stepped parapet sheathed in metal stamped right into a brick pattern, gives it a kind of quiet dignity, a plain-spoken honesty that suits a cafe just fine. And if you're wondering about the facilities, well, let's just say that in 1984 the outdoor bathroom situation got itself sorted out, and nobody complained about that particular upgrade.

What makes the Burton Cafe worth stopping for, worth marking, is simple. It has been a popular feature of downtown Burton through the years. Not a monument.

Not a spectacle. Just a constant. And in Texas, sometimes a constant is the most remarkable thing of all.
