Johnson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Nancy and Aquilla Cahill came to Texas in 1859 and put down roots right here in this part of Johnson County. Around their farm, little by little, a whole community took shape, and that community carried their name: Cahill.

Now that's the kind of legacy most folks only dream about. But the story doesn't stop with a farm and a name on a map. Fast forward to 1893.

Aquilla Cahill was gone by then, but his daughter Sarah E. Snodgrass wasn't about to let that be the end of it. She deeded land, right here, for a Methodist church and a cemetery, and she did it in memory of her father.

Think about that for a moment. A daughter honoring her father by giving a community a place to gather, a place to worship, and a place to rest. Church members got to work and built a sanctuary and a tabernacle with their own hands.

And because this was rural Texas and ministers were stretched thin across wide-open country, the congregation was served by circuit riding ministers, men on horseback covering ground that would wear out most folks just thinking about it. The Cahill Methodist Church has been a focal point of this community throughout its entire existence, drawing people in from a large rural area. Nancy and Aquilla arrived in 1859 with little more than a future ahead of them.

What grew up around them was something that outlasted them both, a church, a cemetery, a community, all carrying the Cahill name forward.
