Sabine County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Sabine County. Now, some stories come with a clean beginning, a date carved in stone, a founder's name up front.

This one doesn't. The founding date of Cedar Grove Colored Baptist Church is unknown. But here's what the records do show: the land itself goes all the way back to a property grant given to a man named James Mason, in 1830.

Whatever gathered there in those early years, something was already taking root. Church records suggest the congregation was established around 1890. That's the closest thing to a birthday this church has got, and it carries real weight.

We're talking about an African American congregation finding its footing, building something that mattered, in a county and an era where that took more than faith. It took courage. By 1904, the congregation had grown enough to make a move, picking up and relocating three miles southeast to the spot where the church stands today.

And then, just a little over a decade later, in 1915, Cedar Grove took on an even bigger role in the community. The church began serving as a school for black students. Think about what that means.

When the schoolhouse door wasn't open to you, the church opened its own. By the early 1930s, the building itself was growing, with the rear portion of the structure added during those years. And by the early 1960s, the congregation established a cemetery on the grounds, a place not just for the living but for the memory of all who came before.

Cedar Grove Baptist Church is recognized as one of the first black churches in all of Sabine County. And more than a church, it has been a place of support, a school, a sanctuary, a home for community when community was hard to come by. Some stories don't have a clean first line.

But they have a long one. And this one is still being written.
