Fort Bend County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it along just the same way. Frederick and Anna Cesinger brought their family out to this part of Fort Bend County in 1891. They put down roots the way folks did back then, with land and intention.

They bought a 320-acre tract, and two years after that, Frederick and Anna deeded 160 acres to their son George. That's a good-sized piece of the world to hand to a young man, and George took it seriously. Then 1894 came along, and it brought grief with it.

George's sister Philipina died that year, just one month before her eighth birthday. One month. Now, George could have let the sorrow just settle into the ground and leave no mark.

Instead, he set aside one acre of his land as a family burial ground. One acre carved out of everything else, for her, and for whoever came after. Over the years, the cemetery gathered Cesingers and related family members and neighbors alike, the way a quiet piece of ground will do when a community grows up around it.

From 1909 to 1928, the German Evangelical Emmanuel Church in Needville owned and maintained the graveyard. But when that chapter closed, the land found its way back. It was returned to the Cesinger heirs.

Some things just belong where they started.

What the marker says

Frederick and Anna Cesinger brought their family to this area to live in 1891. They bought a 320-acre tract of land, and two years later deeded 160 acres to their son, George. In 1894, when George's sister Philipina died just one month before her eighth birthday, he set aside one acre of land for a family burial ground. Among the interments here are those of Cesinger and related family members and neighbors. Although owned and maintained from 1909 to 1928 by the german Evangelical Emmanuel Church in Needville, the graveyard later was returned to Cesinger heirs.
