Robertson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. The land where Hearne, Texas stands today was originally granted back in 1830 to a man named Francisco Ruiz, commander of Fort Tenoxtitlan. That's where this story begins, on a piece of Texas ground with some history already baked into it before most folks even arrived.

The first settler to put down roots here was S. Code Brown, and the man did not come light. He ran a tavern, a stage stand, a store, and a post office, all serving a large surrounding area.

One man, one operation, covering a lot of ground. Then came 1852, and with it a wave of southern planters, including two men named Ebenezer and Horatio Hearne. Those two would eventually till five thousand acres of land right here in Robertson County.

Five thousand acres. That is not a small ambition. Now, here is the part of the story that tends to stop people cold.

Christopher Columbus Hearne had made a promise, a promise that the Houston and Texas Central Railroad would receive seven hundred acres of land when the railroad built out to this site. Well, the railroad came in 1868, and Christopher Columbus Hearne was not there to honor that promise himself. His wife was.

Mrs. Christopher Columbus Hearne kept her husband's word, donated those seven hundred acres, and the railroad had its home. The town was platted in 1870, named for the Hearne family, and incorporated in 1871.

A promise kept. A town born. That's Hearne, Texas.

What the marker says

Among the southern planters coming here (1852) were Ebenezer and Horatio Hearne, who later tilled 5,000 acres of land.
