Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it along just the same. Way out in Madison County, near the banks of Cobbs Creek, a small group of people gathered together in 1883. That's where this story starts.
No grand building, no long history behind them yet. Just a handful of folks with a shared purpose, organizing themselves into a Missionary Baptist Church. They named it for the creek nearby, which is exactly the kind of practical, no-nonsense thinking that built this part of Texas.
And they called the Reverend E. W. Mitchell to serve as their first pastor.
The congregation was underway. Now, a church without a home of its own is always working toward something, and this one was no different. In 1901, land at this very site was acquired, and the members rolled up their sleeves and got to work raising funds for a new sanctuary.
Not a contractor handed the job. Not a wealthy donor footing the bill alone. Church members, together, doing what needed doing.
That's a detail worth sitting with for a moment. Then came 1962, and with it a change. The congregation that had carried the name of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church for nearly eight decades became Elwood Baptist Church.
A new name, but the same roots, the same community, the same calling. Over the years, additional facilities were built to keep pace with a growing congregation. Worship.
Education. Programs that kept reaching out to the community around them. What started as a small gathering near a creek in 1883 never stopped growing, and never stopped serving.
Some things, it turns out, are just built to last.
What the marker says
In 1883 a small group of people gathered together to organize a Missionary Baptist Cchurch. Named for its location near Cobbs Creek, the congregation called the Rev. E. W. Mitchell as its first pastor. Land at this site was acquired in 1901, and church members worked together to raise funds for a new sanctuary. The name of the church was changed to Elwood Baptist Church in 1962. Additional facilities were built over the years to accommodate the growing congregation, which continues to serve the community with worship and educational programs. (1991)
