Cherokee County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Cherokee County, there's a place called Cold Springs, and the story starts in 1876, when land at this site was deeded, two ways at once, to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and to the County School Superintendent. One piece of ground, two purposes: a church and a public school.

Now that's efficient, even by Texas standards. The name Cold Springs comes from a large spring nearby, and if you've ever been out in the East Texas heat, you understand why a cold spring is the kind of thing worth naming something after. The Cold Springs Methodist Church has been served by circuit ministers throughout its history, meaning the preacher came to you, rode a circuit, touched down, delivered the word, and moved on down the road.

That's a particular kind of faith, the kind that doesn't wait for convenience. Over at the schoolhouse, things started lean. One teacher handled everything, all the grades, all the subjects, until about 1900.

After that, they brought in additional teachers, which tells you the community was growing, putting down roots, filling up those benches. The school kept at it for decades, right up until it closed in 1944. Together, the sanctuary and the schoolhouse served for many years as a focal point for the surrounding rural area.

Not a courthouse, not a bank, not a railroad stop. A church and a school. That's what held this piece of Cherokee County together.
