Williamson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the marker tells it, and I'm passing it straight along to you. Picture the rolling farmland of Williamson County, and imagine the word spreading across an ocean. Austria, Bohemia, Germany, Moravia, Silesia.

All those old European places, and word had gotten out about the same thing: rich soil, waiting. So they came, wave after wave through the 1880s and 90s, and they put down roots in a place that would eventually carry a name worth considering. Theon.

Greek for "to God." That's what they called it when the post office opened in 1890, and you have to wonder if whoever chose that name had been out in those fields on a good harvest morning. Now, before the post office had a name, before there was much of anything, there was a cotton gin. Built about 1883, and that gin is really where the community gathered itself around.

A center of gravity, right there in the fields. Over at nearby Corn Hill, a Catholic church and school went up, giving families a place to worship and children a place to learn. And these settlers, they weren't just working.

A rifle club got organized, sponsoring dances, rifle contests, socials, the kind of gatherings that stitch people together when the nearest city is a long wagon ride away. Then there was the beef club. Now that's a idea with some real Texas practicality to it.

Farmers got together, butchered meat monthly, and shared it with all the families. Every family eating. Nobody left out.

The post office eventually closed. The school eventually closed. But that cotton gin, the thing that started it all back around 1883, kept right on running, kept right on serving the area.

Some things outlast the names we give them.

What the marker says

Attracted to the rich farm land, immigrants from Austria, Bohemia, Germany, Moravia and Silesia came here in the 1880s-90s. This community grew around a cotton gin built about 1883. A Catholic church and school operated at nearby Corn Hill. A post office, named "Theon" for the Greek "to God", opened in 1890. A rifle club sponsored dances, rifle contests and other socials. Farmers started a beef club, butchered mean monthly and shared it with all families. After the post office and school closed, the cotton gin continued to serve this area.
