Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Denton County, along a stretch of road called Fishtrap, there's a church that's been holding its ground since before most of Texas was even settled into a routine. The Cooper Creek Baptist Church.
And its story doesn't start with a grand dedication or a ribbon cutting. It starts, quiet and determined, as early as 1872, when Baptists in the Cooper Creek community were already gathering for church in a building located close to where the current structure stands today. No fanfare.
Just folks who decided they needed a place to worship, and built one. Now that building did its job for a good long while, but by 1916 the congregation had something bigger in mind. That's when a man named L.F.
Tom Collins, and yes, they called him Tom, donated land to the church so they could build a new sanctuary. The congregation got to work, and by the following year, 1917, that new white frame church was standing tall and ready. A white frame church, which is about as honest and straightforward a thing as Texas ever built.
Then came 1961. The congregation wasn't sitting still. They added a new steeple and a new entrance, and as the membership kept growin, they expanded into smaller buildings to hold it all together.
Now here's the part that'll make you look twice if you're driving Fishtrap Road. That original 1917 white frame church, it didn't get torn down. It got moved.
Picked up and carried east of the schoolhouse, across Fishtrap Road, where it still had a role to play. And back on the original site, in the year 2000, the congregation raised the current sanctuary. Same ground.
New walls. Old roots. The marker puts it plainly, and sometimes plain is powerful: for more than a hundred years, the Cooper Creek Church has been a sanctuary for the community.
And today, the people sitting in those pews include descendants of the original settling families. That's not just history. That's continuity.
And out here on Fishtrap Road, it's very much still alive.
What the marker says
AS EARLY AS 1872 BAPTISTS IN THE COOPER CREEK COMMUNITY MET FOR CHURCH IN A BUILDING LOCATED CLOSE TO THE CURRENT STRUCTURE. IN 1916, L.F. "TOM" COLLINS DONATED LAND TO THE CHURCH TO BUILD A NEW SANCTUARY, WHICH WAS COMPLETED THE FOLLOWING YEAR. IN 1961, THE CONGREGATION ADDED A NEW STEEPLE AND ENTRANCE, AND EXPANDED INTO SMALLER BUILDINGS AS ITS MEMBERSHIP GREW. THE CURRENT SANCTUARY WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 2000 ON THE ORIGINAL SITE OF THE 1917 WHITE FRAME CHURCH, WHICH HAD BEEN MOVED ACROSS FISHTRAP ROAD, EAST OF THE SCHOOLHOUSE. FOR MORE THAN A HUNDRED YEARS, THE COOPER CREEK CHURCH HAS BEEN A SANCTUARY FOR THE COMMUNITY AND ITS CURRENT MEMBERSHIP INCLUDES DESCENDANTS OF THE ORIGINAL SETTLING FAMILIES.
