Gaines County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, when you're talkin' about the bones of Gaines County, the courthouses and the churches and the schoolhouses that gave this place its shape, you keep comin' back to one name. Dan Cobb.

Born December 2, 1868, in Tennessee. A man who came out to this stretch of West Texas and left it fundamentally different than he found it. The marker doesn't dress it up much, but it doesn't need to.

The facts carry the weight just fine. In 1906, Dan Cobb designed and constructed the first Gaines County Courthouse. Think about that for a moment.

The first one. From the ground up. And then, because apparently one courthouse wasn't enough of a legacy, he came back and built the second courthouse in 1922.

Same county. Same man. Two different eras of this place, and Cobb's hands are on both of them.

He also built a First Baptist Church sanctuary, a schoolhouse, and other significant early structures of the area. The word the marker uses is significant, and that word is doing real work here. These weren't throwaway buildings.

They were the infrastructure of a community still figuring out what it was goin' to become. Now, while all of this building was goin' on, Dan and his wife Aurelia, born 1869, she was an Aurelia Metcalf before she was an Aurelia Cobb, they built a home right here at this site. Also in 1906.

A home for their family of six children. So the same year the man is raising the county's first courthouse, he is also raising a house for his family. That's not a coincidence.

That's a man who understood that a county and a home get built the same way: one deliberate piece at a time. And he wasn't just a builder in the physical sense. Dan Cobb was a charter member of the First Baptist Church.

He served on the Seminole School Board from its founding. He held a federal mail contract covering a three-county area. Leadership, civic commitment, the connective tissue of a place still coming into its own.

Aurelia lived on until 1953. Dan passed May 16, 1937. The marker says his pioneer efforts and leadership were vital to the early growth of Gaines County.

Vital. Not helpful, not notable. Vital.

Some men build buildings. Dan Cobb built a county.
