Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about East Trinity Lodge Number One Fifty-Seven. Now, Rockwall County, you're driving through it right now, but back in 1854, this whole stretch of land was still part of Kaufman County. That's where this story starts, and it starts with a dispensation.
July 26, 1854. Somebody put pen to paper and granted permission for a Masonic lodge to take shape out here on the eastern edge of the Trinity country. The Grand Lodge of Texas didn't leave the new outfit to figure itself out.
They named James Wilson as the first master, the man in charge from the jump. Standing alongside him were two men who had roots sunk deep into this soil long before the lodge ever existed. John O.
Heath came in as senior warden, and S. R. Barnes took the post of junior warden.
Here's the thing about those two: Barnes and Heath weren't newcomers. They were among the earliest residents of the area to receive land grants, and those grants came in 1848. These weren't men just passin' through.
They were here, they were staying, and when it came time to build something lasting, they stepped up. The dispensation got the lodge breathing, but it was the charter that gave it a heartbeat. That charter was issued January 18, 1855.
And from that point forward, East Trinity Lodge Number One Fifty-Seven was a going concern. Now, lodges in sparsely settled country have a way of finding each other over time. Six miles to the south, there was another lodge; the E.
C. Heath Masonic Lodge. It had its own story, its own history.
But in 1968, that lodge merged with East Trinity, bringing two lines of tradition together under one roof. From a land grant in 1848, to a charter in 1855, to a merger more than a century later, some things out here were built to last.
What the marker says
A dispensation for the formation of the lodge was granted July 26, 1854, when Rockwall was part of Kaufman County. The Grand Lodge of Texas designated James Wilson as the first master. John O. Heath served as senior warden and S. R. Barnes as junior warden. Barnes and Heath were among the earliest residents of the area to receive land grants in 1848. The lodge charter was issued January 18, 1855. The E. C. Heath Masonic Lodge, located six miles south, merged with East Trinity in 1968.
