Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Eben-Ezer Evangelical Lutheran Church, out in Washington County. Now picture this. It's December 24, 1854.

Christmas Eve. A missionary by the name of Reverend Johann Ebinger has ridden into the Berlin community, which German settlers had put down roots in back in 1847. Cold night, probably.

Quiet. And on that night, Reverend Ebinger holds the earliest Lutheran service Washington County had ever seen. Not a bad way to spend Christmas Eve, if you ask me.

Ebinger was out of Harris County, and he clearly liked what he found in Berlin, because he came back. On July 1, 1855, he founded the Eben-Ezer Church. He didn't do it alone.

William C. Bohne, F. H.

Ehlert, F. F. Spreen, and others stepped up as trustees, and just like that, a congregation had a name and a purpose.

Now every church needs land. That problem was solved by a man named Ludwig C. Lehmann, who donated an eleven-acre site for the church to call its own.

Lehmann was born in 1794 and died in 1855, meaning the community barely had time to thank him properly. Then came the building. And this is where the story gets real Texan.

The landowners of the area gave post oak logs. The renters, the folks who didn't own the land but worked it, they gave their labor. Together, what went up was not just a church but a church with a parsonage built right into it.

One building doing double duty. And those early pastors, they used that same building for school. The same walls that held Sunday sermons held weekday lessons.

Spiritual center, schoolhouse, community anchor, all under one post oak roof. That's Eben-Ezer. A congregation born on Christmas Eve, built by the hands of people who gave what they had, log or labor, and it became the heart of the Berlin community.

What the marker says

Spiritual center of the Berlin community, which was settled by Germans in 1847. On a missionary visit, Dec. 24, 1854, The Rev. Johann Ebinger (1828-1908) of Harris County held earliest Lutheran service in Washington County. On July 1, 1855, he founded Eben-Ezer Church with William C. Bohne, F. H. Ehlert, F. F. Spreen and others as trustees. Ludwig C. Lehmann (1794-1855) donated 11-acre church site. Landowners gave post oak logs, renters gave labor for building first church, incorporating a parsonage. The early pastors taught school in that first church building.
