Duane's take
The way the marker tells it, here's the story of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Panola County. Before there was a Panola County, before the county lines were even drawn, there was a congregation. Organized in 1843, out at a place called Old Macedonia, three miles east of where you're standing now.
That's three years before Panola County itself came into being. Think about that. The church came first.
The county had to catch up. Now, the marker says it is believed, and that's an honest hedge worth honoring, that this congregation was formed through the missionary efforts of the Reverend Littleton Fowler. And Reverend Fowler was no ordinary circuit rider.
He was one of the earliest Protestant ministers in the Republic of Texas itself. Not the state. The Republic.
This congregation has roots that go all the way down to when Texas was its own nation. Then comes 1872. A man named John Henry Ross deeded land right here at this site, land for the church, land for a school, and land for a cemetery.
The whole arc of a community's life, right there in one deed. Worship, learning, and a place to rest when the work is done. For a spell the church went by a different name.
Walton Church, they called it. But that name didn't stick, and the congregation carried on as Ebenezer United Methodist Church. A focal point, the marker says, for the surrounding rural community, for well over a century.
Started before the county existed, named in a deed alongside a school and a cemetery, known by more than one name before it settled into the one it still carries. Some things take root so deep that county lines and passing names just don't move them.
