Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, when you're rollin' through Concho County and you hit the town of Eden, you might wonder how a place ends up with a name like that out here in the Texas scrubland. Well, the marker has an answer, and it starts with a man who came a long way to find his patch of ground.
Frederick Ede, native of England, made his way out to this corner of Texas and set himself up as a pioneer ranchman. And it was right there on his land, his own acreage, that a town began to take shape. Founded in 1882, built up from the dirt and the possibility of it all.
Now here's the part worth noting. Frederick Ede didn't just watch the town grow up around him and collect the credit. He donated the land for the public square.
The very ground where a community gathers, where folks meet and linger and conduct the business of living together. He gave that. The town, for its part, carries a version of his name to this day.
Not Ede exactly, but Eden, and that square sits right at the heart of it. By 1910 the town had grown enough to incorporate, to make itself official, to say: we are here, and we intend to stay. Farming and ranching have always been the backbone of this place.
And if you want to talk about what Eden sends out into the wider world, you're talking wool and mohair. This is a wool and mohair marketing center, sitting up at an elevation of two thousand and fifty-two feet, which gives you some sense of the country. High, open, and serious about its sky.
And when the community needed a hospital, they built one. The Concho County Hospital found its home right here in Eden. One man's ranchland.
One donated square. And a whole county's worth of life that grew up around it.
