Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how Duane tells it back to you. In 1925, in Bryan, Texas, a two-and-a-half story brick house came into being, and it was not a modest affair. Not even a little bit.

This was a house built for Eugene Edge, a prominent merchant in Bryan, and his wife Cora Zulch, and from the moment it was completed, it announced itself. Georgian Revival style, the marker calls it, and if you know what that means, you're already picturing something stately. If you don't, let me paint it for you with what the marker gives us.

Symmetrical composition, so every line balanced against every other line, the way a careful mind arranges things. An entry portico with Doric columns standing out front like they've been waiting for you personally. Stone quoins at the corners, which are those decorative blocks that dress up the edges of a brick building and say, quietly but firmly, that someone here cared about the details.

Gabled dormers up top, poking out of the roofline. And a fanlight transom above the entry, that graceful half-circle of glass that lets the light in and makes a first impression all on its own. Eugene Edge was born in 1879, and he and Cora built this house to last.

Cora passed in 1939. Eugene in 1954. And here is the part that settles into you if you let it.

After both of them were gone, the house stayed in the Edge family. It did not pass on, it did not scatter. It held.

All the way until 1978, that house remained in the hands of the people it was built for. That is not a small thing. A house that outlasts its builders and still keeps the name.

The Edge House, Bryan, Texas. Some things are built to stand, and then they just go ahead and do it.

What the marker says

Completed in 1925 for the family of prominent Bryan merchant Eugene Edge (1879-1954) and his wife Cora Zulch (d. 1939), this two-and-one-half story brick house reflects the Georgian Revival style. Defining features include its symmetrical composition, entry portico with Doric columns, stone quoins, gabled dormers, and fanlight transom. After the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Edge, the house remained in the Edge family until 1978. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1991
