Wharton County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way down in Wharton County, in the city of El Campo, there's a building that's been quietly collecting stories for well over a hundred years. And if you pay attention to the way it's built, it'll tell you a few of its own.

The El Campo Library Association got the whole thing rolling back in 1902, when they started the city's very first library. That's the kind of civic ambition that deserves a little respect right there. But a fledgling library association can only do so much, and the story kept moving.

By 1927, a public library had opened at the downtown fire station. Books and fire hoses, sharing the same address. El Campo was nothing if not resourceful.

Then 1939 arrives, and a branch of the Wharton County Library was established right there in El Campo, and the momentum built fast. The very next year, 1940, this building was completed. Now here's where the story gets interesting, because this isn't just a box with books inside.

The building is something to look at. It exhibits the characteristic elements of moderne architecture, and you can feel it most strongly in the entryway, in the light fixtures, and in the signage. Clean lines, a certain confidence, a building that knew exactly what era it was born into and dressed for the occasion.

It served as a library for decades, until 1965, when the library facilities were moved on to new quarters. And the building, rather than fading into the background, reinvented itself. By 1983, it had become a community art center.

A place that once shelved stories was now hanging them on the walls. That's the kind of second act a good building earns.
