Tom Green County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Tom Green County, the story of Emmanuel Episcopal Church goes back further than the building you see today. Way further.

The first Episcopal services in the whole area were held at Fort Concho, back in 1871. A military post before a proper parish. That's where this congregation's roots reach down into the Texas soil.

Then, in 1888, the first parish church was built. And it didn't get built alone. Emmanuel Episcopal Church, all the way up in Baltimore, Maryland, reached out a helping hand to make it happen.

Two churches, one name, separated by more than a thousand miles of American countryside, and yet connected in that particular way that communities of faith sometimes find each other across impossible distances. Now, the building standing today dates to 1929. But here's where the story gets genuinely good.

This is not a church built from nothing. When the builders raised these walls, they reached back into the bones of Tom Green County itself. The stones in this edifice, they came from the 1884 Tom Green County Courthouse.

Think about that for a moment. The very courthouse that once held the legal and civic life of this county, its stones didn't disappear when that building came down. They got a second life, built right into a house of worship.

And the garden wall stones, those came from the 1884 Ragsdale Building. Same year, same town, different purpose, same second chance. And then there's the bell.

The bell hanging in this church came from that same 1884 courthouse too. So when it rings out over Tom Green County, it's ringing with the voice of something older than the church itself. Three buildings worth of history, gathered up and given new meaning.

That is one way a community holds onto what came before.
