Gillespie County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm passing it along to you. Out here in Gillespie County, the limestone doesn't just sit in the hills. Sometimes it gets quarried, shaped, and stacked into something that was meant to last.

And this building, the F. W. Arhelger Shop, is exactly that kind of something.

Frederick William Arhelger was a second generation cabinetmaker and wheelwright. Think about that for a moment. His father had already learned the trade, passed it down, and Frederick William took that inheritance and ran with it.

In 1898, he constructed this building right here, quarried limestone and all, designed specifically to handle wagons and large farm equipment. Now, if you're going to build a place for wagons, you build it right. Arhelger knew that.

The front ramp, the double doors, the whole interior left wide open without a partition in sight. Maximum access, maximum function. Whatever you were rolling in, it was going to fit.

He operated that business for twenty years, right up until 1918, when he sold it to Ernst Schmidt. That's the whole arc, a craftsman's son who quarried the rock, built the shop, worked it through two decades of Texas farming life, and then passed it on. The building is still standing.

The limestone saw to that.

What the marker says

Frederick William Arhelger, a second generation cabinetmaker and wheelwright, constructed this building in 1898 for use as a farm implement shop. Built of quarried limestone, it was designed to accommodate wagons and large farm equipment. The front ramp, double doors, and the absence of partitions provided maximum access to the interior. Arhelger operated the business until 1918 when he wold it to Ernst Schmidt. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1980
