Medina County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. Somewhere around 1870, a German artisan set his mind to building something that would last. And friend, when I say last, I mean last.

He was already putting up houses all across the area, this craftsman, leaving his mark on the landscape one stone and timber at a time. But this one, this house, this was something else. Let's talk about those walls first.

Twenty-two inches thick. Limestone, quarried right there in the neighborhood, stacked and fitted until those walls could probably shrug off just about anything a Texas summer or a Texas century could throw at them. Then there's the fireplace.

Hand-carved stone. Not stamped, not poured, not ordered from a catalog. Hand-carved.

You can feel the patience in that detail, the kind of patience a craftsman carries like a tool on his belt. Now here's the part I want you to picture. Those attic timbers didn't just appear.

Cypress logs were floated down the Medina River, then adzed lengthwise, shaped by hand into the beams overhead. Think about that. The river itself was part of the supply chain.

And once those timbers were in place and the limestone walls were rising, the builder added touches that still stop people cold: an outside kitchen, and a stairway landing so unique the marker writers saw fit to call it out by name. No further explanation needed, apparently. Some things you just have to see.

One German artisan, a river, a nearby quarry, and about 1870. The house is still standing.
