Duane's take
The way the marker tells it, here's what happened out here in Midland County. By May 31, 1885, this ground was already in use as a cemetery. Ten acres, the southeast corner of this very tract, accepted as a gift from the Midland Town Company.
And the body that accepted it was the board of commissioners of a newly organized Midland County, doing so at their very first meeting on August 10, 1885. Think about that for a moment. Brand new county, brand new commissioners, and one of the first orders of business was setting aside ground for the dead.
Some things a community has to reckon with right from the start. Among the pioneers buried here are veterans of the Mexican War and the Civil War. Men who had already lived through things most people only read about, who made their way out to this part of Texas and finally laid down roots in this ten acres of donated earth.
Fairview Cemetery. The gift came first, the first meeting made it official, and the ground has been holding its history ever since.
