Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll give it to you straight from the record. Way out in Eastland County, in the town of Carbon, there's a congregation with deep roots. And I mean deep.

This is the story of the First Baptist Church in Carbon, and it goes back to 1885. That's when it all began, right around the time the town of Carbon itself was getting started. Now, picture it.

No grand sanctuary, no stained glass catching the afternoon light. Just a brush arbor. Open air, sky overhead, the kind of shelter folks threw together when they needed a place to gather and the land was still raw.

Under that brush arbor, a church was born. Twelve charter members. Twelve people who showed up and said, yes, this is where we plant our flag.

The Rev. W.B. Cobb was the first pastor, the man who stood before those twelve and helped them become something.

From that small beginning, the congregation grew. Over time it built out organizations like the Woman's Missionary Society and put together youth programs, giving people of every generation a place in the work. Members reached beyond the walls of Carbon too, participating in missionary activities across the area.

And here's the part that deserves a moment of stillness. By the time that marker went up in 1988, the First Baptist Church of Carbon had been woven into the life of that town for over one hundred years. Started under a brush arbor with twelve souls, and still standing.

That's not just a church. That's a cornerstone.
