Archer County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Archer City was barely a dot on the map — laid out in 1879, still finding its footing — when somebody made a decision that set the whole tone for what this town was going to be. A building had gone up with every intention of becoming a saloon.

And then the residents bought it. Bought it right out from under that purpose and turned it into a schoolhouse. Now, I'm not sayin' there's a sermon in that, but I'm not sayin' there isn't, either.

Come February of 1880, eight members gathered inside that very schoolhouse and organized the First Baptist Church of Archer City. Eight people. That's it.

You could seat them all at one long dinner table, and there'd still be room for the cornbread. But they had something — enough to hold services right there in that school building, worshiping together until they could do better. They did better in 1890, when a proper meetinghouse finally went up.

Then a storm came along and destroyed it. Leveled it. The kind of ending that stops some folks cold — but not these folks.

They rebuilt. Right back up. The man leading the charge in those early days was the Reverend Joe B.

Benson — everybody called him Uncle Joe — the church's first pastor. Uncle Joe didn't just tend to Archer City. He was out preaching in the nearby communities too, spreading the work as wide as his boots would carry him.

The Sunday School got its start in 1899, and over time the fellowship kept growing, drawing in Westfork, Baxter, and New Bethel Community Baptist Churches, all joining together under one roof of shared faith. New sanctuaries rose in 1929 and again in 1972. From a repurposed saloon building to a congregation that outlasted storms and stretched across communities — that's not a bad run for eight people who showed up one February with something to believe in.

What the marker says

Soon after Archer City was laid out in 1879, a building intended for a saloon was bought by residents for use as a schoolhouse. In February 1880, eight members organized First Baptist Church in the school building and worshiped there until a meetinghouse was erected in 1890. The structure was destroyed in a storm and rebuilt. The Rev. Joe B. (Uncle Joe) Benson, the first pastor, also preached in nearby communities. The Sunday School began in 1899. Westfork, Baxter, and New Bethel Community Baptist Churches joined this fellowship. Sanctuaries were erected in 1929 and in 1972. (1980)
