Duane's take
The official marker for First Baptist Church of Bay City is the one I'm drawing from here, so you know where the story's rooted. Now, if you want to talk about a congregation that had to earn its place in this world, pull up a chair. Because this one didn't start in Bay City.
It didn't even start close. Way back in the early 1850s, the Trespalacios Baptist Church was putting down roots in Matagorda County. That's where this whole story begins — not with steeples and stained glass, but with a little congregation holding on in the Texas countryside.
They kept the faith for decades. Then, in 1889, members of that same Trespalacios congregation organized a Baptist church out in the community of Red Bluff. A fresh start, a new home — but not the last one.
Six years later, in 1895, the congregation picked up again and moved to the new county seat of Bay City. They changed the name — First Baptist Church of Bay City — and joined the Colorado Baptist Association. Grand plans, no doubt.
But here's the thing about grand plans in early Texas: you make do with what you've got. In those early years, the congregation met in a commercial building, then in the Methodist Church building, and even ran a Union school alongside other local denominations. They were sharing pews, sharing classrooms, figuring it out.
It wasn't until 1903 that the Rev. J. H.
Thorn came on as the first full-time pastor. And that same year — that same year — the congregation erected its first sanctuary. Finally, a place to call their own.
Then 1909 arrived. And with it, a hurricane. The building was destroyed.
Not damaged. Destroyed. That's the kind of blow that ends things for some communities.
But not this one. They replaced what they lost with a tabernacle, kept going, and by 1915 they had a brick structure standing at this very site. Brick.
Built to last. The congregation kept building, kept growing. They completed an auditorium in 1941.
Added an education wing to the sanctuary in 1947. And that same year, 1947, First Baptist was instrumental in establishing Cavalry Baptist Church. They were planting new congregations even while expanding their own.
And then there's Emmanuel Mexican Mission — a ministry First Baptist sponsored from 1930 all the way to 1989. Fifty-nine years of commitment to that mission. The congregation also opened a child development center in 1979 and an educational center in 1987, reaching into the community in ways that go well beyond Sunday morning.
From a rural county congregation in the early 1850s to a church still serving Bay City with a variety of ministries — that's not just survival. That's a long, steady, determined kind of faithfulness. And the marker reminding you of all this?
That was placed in 1994. Some buildings get taken by hurricanes. Some congregations just keep building.
