Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the First Baptist Church of Edcouch. Now settle in, because this is a story about a congregation that kept moving, kept growing, and kept the faith through every dusty mile of it. It starts not with a church at all, but with a Sunday School.
A non-denominational Sunday School, organized in 1920, out there in the Rio Grande Valley where the towns themselves were still finding their footing. No walls, no steeple, no name above the door. Just people gathering, as people do, around something they believed in.
Then came the reverends. The Reverend T. F.
Kelly and the Reverend M. F. Drury rode in and made it official.
On August 24, 1924, they organized the Los Indios Baptist Church, and that Sunday School had itself a proper identity at last. But this congregation was not the sitting-still kind. In 1925 they picked up and moved to land adjoining the Adams Tract Gin, and then moved again, this time to a site just south of what would become the town of Edcouch.
During those years on the move, they went by the Adams Tract Baptist Church, which tells you something about how a community names itself after the ground it's standing on. Then February of 1927 arrived, and the newly platted town of Edcouch opened its arms. The congregation moved in, and the name changed one final time: First Baptist Church of Edcouch.
That name stuck. By 1949 the members dedicated a new brick building, something solid, something built to last. And here's the thing about a congregation that started as a circle of people with no denomination and no deed to their name: they never stopped serving.
Mission and community service, the marker says, carrying forward the traditions of those founders. From a Sunday School in 1920 to a brick church in the heart of Edcouch, this congregation didn't just follow the town into being. In some ways, they helped lead it there.
What the marker says
Formed from a non-denominational Sunday School organized in 1920, the Los Indios Baptist Church was organized by the Rev. T. F. Kelly and the Rev. M. F. Drury on August 24, 1924. In 1925 the church moved to land adjoining the Adams Tract Gin and then to a site just south of the future Edcouch town site. The church was called Adams Tract Baptist Church until February 1927, when it moved into the newly platted town and became the First Baptist Church of Edcouch. In 1949 the members dedicated a new brick building. Through mission and community service, the First Baptist Church of Edcouch continues the traditions of its founders. (1998)
