Schleicher County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the First Baptist Church of Eldorado, out in Schleicher County. Now settle in, because this one starts the way all good Texas stories do: with a handful of determined people and a river. September 1, 1901.

Fifteen charter members gathered and organized what they called the Eldorado Missionary Baptist Church. Fifteen people. You might think, well, that's a modest beginning.

But here's the thing about modest beginnings in Texas. They have a way of growing before the dust even settles. Because the very next day, the day after the congregation drew its first breath, Reverend Ben Wilson waded into the South Concho River and baptized seven people.

Seven new souls added to the congregation before the ink was dry on the organization papers. One day old, and already growin'. That's a congregation with some momentum.

Now they were meeting, they were worshippin', but they needed a home. That took a few years to come together, and when it did, it came together on donated ground. W.

B. Silliman gave the property, and in 1906, the first church structure rose at this very site. A real building.

A place to point to and say: there, that's ours. That 1906 structure served its purpose, but by 1928 the congregation was ready for something new. A fresh sanctuary went up to replace it.

Then the years kept rolling, and in the 1960s, that 1928 sanctuary was remodeled, updated, shaped to meet the needs of its time. And through all of it, this church was doing more than tending to its own flock. It helped organize local minority Baptist churches in the area.

It reached into the community with outreach work. It sent support all the way out into foreign missionary activities, connecting this little corner of Schleicher County to something much bigger than Eldorado. Fifteen people on a September morning.

A river baptism the very next day. Donated land, a built church, a new sanctuary, a remodeled sanctuary, and a reach that stretched across the community and around the world. That, right there, is what you call a story that earns its marker.

What the marker says

This congregation was organized by 15 charter members on Sept. 1, 1901, and originally called the Eldorado Missionary Baptist Church. The day following its organization seven people, baptized in the South Concho River by the Rev. Ben Wilson, were added to the congregation. The first church structure was built at this site in 1906 on property donated by W. B. Silliman. A new sanctuary, built in 1928 to replace the 1906 structure, was remodeled in the 1960s. This church helped organize local minority Baptist churches and supports community-wide outreach and foreign missionary activities. (1993)
