Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way back in the winter of 1887, something was taking shape on the Galveston County mainland, something that would turn out to be a first. On December 4th of that year, a Baptist congregation came together inside the Clear Creek Schoolhouse and got itself organized.
No grand cathedral, no soaring steeple. Just a schoolhouse, some faithful folks, and a moment that mattered. A man named B.
A. Smalley was there serving as clerk, keeping the record straight from the very beginning. Now, the congregation had its start, but a permanent pastor, that would take a little longer.
It wasn't until October of 1895 that the Reverend D. T. McLeod stepped in as the first permanent pastor of this church.
And once he was there, things started moving. Less than a year later, on June 14th, 1896, the first building erected on this very site was dedicated. From a schoolhouse gathering in December of 1887 to a dedicated building standing on its own ground in the summer of 1896.
That is how the First Baptist Church of League City became the first Baptist church on the Galveston County mainland, and it has been plantin' its roots here ever since.
