Coryell County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's the story as the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna give it to you straight with a little Coryell County flavor. This is the First Baptist Church of Oglesby, and it goes back further than most folks think to dig. We're talkin' 1893, when somebody had the notion to hold a revival right there in Oglesby.

Now, a revival is a spark, not a structure. It gets people moving, gets people talking, gets people wanting something more permanent. And sure enough, by September of 1896, that congregation made it official.

The First Baptist Church of Oglesby had a founding date, a name, and a purpose. They elected J.M.B. Gresham as their first pastor, which is a fine way to start a church, with somebody willing to lead it.

For years, they held services once or twice monthly. Not every Sunday, mind you, but regular enough to hold a community together. That rhythm carried them all the way to 1937.

Now, here is where the story gets its first hard turn. In 1913, the church building burned. Gone.

That is never a small thing, losing a place where people have gathered and prayed and buried their grief and celebrated their joy. But Oglesby didn't fold. The congregation came back the very next year, 1914, with a new building rising where the old one stood.

And then, as the years went on, additions came, one after another, to keep up with the life the church was living. Missionary outreach, community involvement, traditional spiritual programs. The kind of work that doesn't make headlines but holds a town together from the inside out.

By 1996, this congregation had more than a century of story behind it. And that story, friend, started with a single revival in a small Texas town back in 1893.
