Falls County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm just along for the ride. Picture a railroad town, fresh off the surveyor's table, and before the paint is even dry on Rosebud, eleven people decide they need a church. Not a building yet, mind you.

Just eleven souls with a conviction and a schoolhouse on the Gott Farm. On March 2, 1890, that little congregation organized right there on that farm, and they meant business from the first handshake. By September of that same year they had joined the Waco Baptist Association, which was a fine thing.

But 1891 came along, and Falls County decided it wanted its own Baptist Association, and the First Baptist Church of Rosebud was right there at the founding table as a charter member. Still meeting on the Gott Farm, by the way. They worshipped out there until 1892, and then something happened that changed the whole story of this place.

The Texas Town Site Company deeded them a lot, right here on this block, for the purpose of building a proper church. And here is where the tale takes a turn worth savoring: services have been held on that very site ever since. Not just for a season.

Ever since. The congregation didn't stop there. They eventually acquired the entire block and built several progressively larger church structures right here over the years, each one a little taller testament to a congregation that kept on growing.

Then in 1893 the Ladies' Aid Society was formed, and from that point forward the church threw itself into something bigger than Sunday mornings. Missionary work. Social service.

Revitalizing a local Hispanic Baptist mission. Disaster relief. Ministering to the elderly.

Eleven charter members in a schoolhouse on a farm, and look what they started. The First Baptist Church of Rosebud, the marker says, continues to uphold the ideals of its founders. Eleven people, a borrowed schoolhouse, and a whole lot of what you might call holy stubbornness.

That'll do it every time.

What the marker says

One year after the railroad town of Rosebud was platted, the First Baptist Church was established with eleven charter members. On March 2, 1890, the small congregation organized in a schoolhouse on the Gott Farm. In September of that year the church joined the Waco Baptist Association, but in 1891 became a charter member of the newly created Falls County Baptist Association. Worship services were held on the Gott Farm until 1892. That year the Texas Town Site Company deeded a lot on this block for the construction of a church, and services have been held at this site ever since. The congregation later acquired the entire block, and built several progressively larger church structures here over the years to accommodate its growth. Since the Ladies' Aid Society was formed in 1893, the congregation has been active in missionary and social service endeavors including revitalizing a local Hispanic Baptist mission, providing disaster relief, and ministering to the elderly. From its humble beginning, the First Baptist Church of Rosebud has become an important part of the religious life of this community. It continues to uphold the ideals of its founders.
