Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Freestone County, in a little settlement called Brewer Prairie, a small Baptist congregation got itself organized back in 1877. Now, Brewer Prairie wasn't exactly a name that was going to set the world on fire, but that congregation, that was something real.
They gathered, they worshipped, they held on. Then came 1906, and the town got a new name. Teague.
And just like that, this church became the First Baptist Church of Teague. Same year, same moment in history, the congregation planted itself at the corner of 6th Avenue and Walnut Street, and that corner is where the story really digs in. They built their first sanctuary right there on that site.
A place to belong, a place to return to. But nothing that matters comes easy, and this congregation learned that more than once. That first sanctuary, it gave way to a second building in 1929.
A new chapter, a fresh start. And then, well, fire has a way of writing its own chapter. That 1929 building was destroyed by fire.
Gone. Now, lesser congregations might have scattered to the wind after something like that. But not this one.
They went to work. By 1948, a new brick sanctuary stood completed on that same corner, on that same ground where a handful of believers had shown up back when the place was still called Brewer Prairie. Over a century of Teague history.
Same corner. Same faith. That's not nothing, friend.
That's everything.
What the marker says
This church traces its history to 1877, when a small Baptist congregation was organized in the village of Brewer Prairie. It became known as the First Baptist Church of Teague when the town was renamed in 1906. Located at the corner of 6th Avenue and Walnut Street since 1906, the congregation has met in several buildings on this site. The first sanctuary was replaced by a second facility in 1929. After the 1929 building was destroyed by fire, a new brick sanctuary was completed in 1948. The church has been part of Teague history for over a century. (1988)
