Here's how the official marker tells it, as best as Duane can relay. The First Baptist Church of Terrell, Kaufman County, and this one's got a slow build, like all the best stories do. It starts small.

Real small. The year is 1876, and the Reverend J. B.

Daniel is organizin' a congregation from scratch. Thirteen members. That's it.

Thirteen souls gatherin' once a month for services, which (you think about the rhythms of life back then, the distances, the weather) once a month was no small commitment. The Reverend Daniel served as that church's first pastor, and he'd go on to do so until his death in 1884. Eight years of shepherding something from nothing.

Now, three years after that first gathering, in 1879, they raised a proper building: a small frame structure, right there on that block. Same year, the Women's Missionary Society was established. And here's the detail that stops you: that Society, founded in 1879, continues to serve that fellowship today.

That's the kind of continuity that doesn't announce itself. It just endures. By 1905, the congregation had grown enough to build a new brick sanctuary.

And when that chapter eventually gave way to the next, somebody made sure the stained glass windows from that 1905 sanctuary didn't get left behind. They were transferred, carried over, into the present church building, completed in 1956. Old light through old glass, in a new house.

By 1975, membership had grown to around 850. Thirteen members meetin' once a month, to eight hundred and fifty. The Reverend Daniel planted something in 1876 that just kept growin'.

What the marker says

The Rev. J. B. Daniel (d. 1884) organized this church in 1876 and served as its first pastor. The congregation started with 13 members, who met once a month for services. The first church building was a small frame structure erected on this block in 1879. The Women's Missionary Society, established the same year, continues to serve this fellowship today. In 1905 a new brick sanctuary was built. The stained glass windows from it were transferred to the present church building, completed in 1956. Membership in this congregation has steadily grown to its current (1975) total of about 850.
