Duane's take
Here's the story as the official marker tells it, and I'll let the facts do the heavy liftin'. Now picture this: it's 1861, and twelve citizens in Waxahachie walk into a Methodist church. That's not the setup to a joke; that's the founding of the First Baptist Church of Waxahachie.
Twelve people. That's it. Barely enough to field a baseball team, and they were already building something meant to last generations.
They elected W.H. Stokes as their first pastor, and then they did what any determined congregation does when the future isn't quite settled yet: they wandered. Met in several locations, wherever they could find a roof and a willing room.
For over two decades, no permanent home to call their own. Then 1882 rolls around, and they finally raise their first church building. You can almost hear the exhale.
Twenty-one years of searching, and now four walls, a foundation, a place on the map. But a congregation that's growing doesn't stand still for long. Several successive structures followed, each one a testament to a community outgrowing its own ambitions.
By 1949, they were breaking ground on what would become the present facilities. And in 1959, they dedicated the present sanctuary. That's a word worth sitting with: dedicated.
Not just finished. Not just opened. Dedicated.
For over 125 years, the First Baptist Church concentrated its efforts on Baptist missionary activities and community assistance projects. Not a footnote in Waxahachie history; a chapter. A long one.
And then, quietly, the supplemental plaque tells you one more thing. In January of 2019, after 137 years at the Rogers Street location, the church relocated. One hundred and thirty-seven years on a single street corner.
Most things in Texas don't last 137 days without somebody redeveloping them. But this congregation planted itself on Rogers Street in 1882 and didn't move until 2019. Twelve people walked into a Methodist church in 1861 with nothing but conviction.
What they started is still going.
