Duane's take
Well, I'm putting my own voice to what the official marker has to say, so let's see where this story goes. Now, most churches can tell you when they were founded. This one?
This one's got to reach back even further than a date; it's got to reach back to a place that doesn't even exist on the map anymore. The congregation that would one day become First Baptist Church of Wylie has its origins in the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Nickleville. And before they had a building, before they had so much as a proper roof over their heads, they were meeting in private homes.
That was the arrangement prior to 1870. Picture it: neighbors gathered in somebody's front room, making do, building something that mattered out of nothing but faith and a little bit of floor space. Then, about 1887, the town became a part of a new community called Wylie, and the church followed right along, now going by the Missionary Baptist Church of Wylie.
New name, same people, same purpose. Fast forward to 1905, and the members put their money where their mission was. They purchased land at the present site and constructed a sanctuary.
An actual building. Four walls, a roof, a place that said we're here and we're staying. Growth kept coming, and by 1914 they were calling a full-time pastor, no more part-time arrangements, and expanding the facilities to make room for new programs.
Then 1942 rolls around, and the name settles into what it is today: First Baptist Church of Wylie. Through all of it (from somebody's living room in Nickleville to a proper sanctuary in Wylie), the congregation held onto the same three things: education, worship, and community outreach. Some things, it turns out, don't need a new name to stay true.
What the marker says
First Baptist Church of Wylie This congregation has its origins in the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Nickleville, which met in private homes prior to 1870. After the town became a part of the new community of Wylie about 1887, the church became known as the Missionary Baptist Church of Wylie. Members purchased land at the present site in 1905 and constructed a sanctuary. Continued growth led to the calling of a full-time pastor in 1914 and the expansion of the facilities for new programs. Known as first Baptist Church of Wylie since 1942, the congregation has upheld its commitment to education, worship and community outreach throughout its history. (2002)
