Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Back in 1894, a man named Reverend Monroe F. Jackson came to Malakoff with something on his mind.

He founded a congregation, and he gave it a name that carried weight right from the start. Good Hope Baptist Church. Good Hope.

Now that's the kind of name you don't just pick out of the air. That's a name you carry with intention. That same year, three church trustees stepped up to make sure Good Hope would have ground to stand on.

Sam Robinson, Monroe Porter, and Governor Wilson went out and acquired land right at this very site, so the congregation would have a building to call its own. That's how fast it all moved. The founding and the land, same year, 1894.

Now Good Hope didn't just tend to itself over the years. It grew, and it gave. The members of that fellowship sponsored the founding of several other churches across western Henderson County.

Antioch. Macedonia. Good Hope was putting down roots and spreading branches at the same time.

Then came 1939, and a merger. Good Hope Baptist Church joined together with Mt. Olive Baptist Church, and when two congregations come together like that, sometimes you need a new name to hold what you've become.

That's when the congregation chose the name First Baptist Church on Walker Street. One church, born from two, standing on ground that trustees claimed way back in eighteen ninety four, still serving western Henderson County all these years on. Some things take root and just don't let go.

What the marker says

In 1894, the Rev. Monroe F. Jackson came to Malakoff and founded this congregation. He named it Good Hope Baptist Church. The same year, church trustees Sam Robinson, Monroe Porter, and Governor Wilson acquired land at this site for a church building. Over the years, the members of the Good Hope fellowship have sponsored the founding of several other churches in western Henderson County, including Antioch and Macedonia. The current name was chosen after Good Hope merged with Mt. Olive Baptist Church in 1939. (1985)
