Parker County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about First Baptist Church in Parker County. Now, 1856 is a long way back, and most things that start in Texas that early either flame out fast or dig in deep. This one dug in.

The congregation organized that year under not one, not two, but three reverends: Noah T. Byars, J.C. Powers, and John Turner.

And they gave it a name to match the ambition: the United Missionary Baptist Church of Christ at Weatherford. That is a name that means business. They weren't in a hurry to shorten it either.

For a good long while, that was the whole title. You wanted to find them, you said the whole thing. Then came the building.

Seventeen years after organizing, in 1873, the congregation completed a sanctuary on the corner of West College and Jordan Streets, which you'd know today as Church at Alamo. Now here's the part worth slowing down for: at the time that sanctuary was completed, it was the only Baptist church in the entire county that had a full-time pastor with services every single Sunday. Not every other Sunday.

Not when the circuit rider came through. Every Sunday. That was something to be proud of in Parker County in 1873.

The congregation kept growin', kept workin', and in 1896 a new church went up, this time on the corner of Palo Pinto and Alamo. Then in 1948, on that very same lot, they built yet again. Three buildings across nearly a century, same community, same mission.

And that mission part matters. As a missionary church, First Baptist sponsored a number of other congregations in the area, helping plant churches the way some folks plant seeds, with the expectation that something living will come up. They also kept supporting their community through activities, charity, and prayer.

From three reverends and a long name in 1856, to a church that helped build other churches. That's a legacy worth a marker.

What the marker says

ORIGINALLY CALLED UNITED MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH OF CHRIST AT WEATHERFORD, THIS CHURCH ORGANIZED IN 1856 UNDER REVERENDS NOAH T. BYARS, J.C. POWERS AND JOHN TURNER. A SANCTUARY WAS COMPLETED IN 1873 ON THE CORNER OF WEST COLLEGE AND JORDAN STREETS (NOW CHURCH AT ALAMO). AT THE TIME OF COMPLETION, IT WAS THE ONLY BAPTIST CHURCH IN THE COUNTY TO HAVE A FULL-TIME PASTOR WITH SERVICES EVERY SUNDAY. A NEW CHURCH WAS BUILT ON THE CORNER OF PALO PINTO AND ALAMO IN 1896. A NEW FACILITY WAS BUILT ON THE SAME LOT IN 1948. AS A MISSIONARY CHURCH, FIRST BAPTIST HAS SPONSORED A NUMBER OF OTHER CHURCHES IN THE AREA. THE CONGREGATION ALSO SUPPORTS ITS COMMUNITY THROUGH ACTIVITIES, CHARITY AND PRAYER.
