Duane's take
Here's the story as the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to give it the telling it deserves. The First Christian Church of Kingsville, Disciples of Christ. Now settle in, because this one starts, like so many good Texas stories, with a railroad and a handful of determined people.
On October 11, 1911, the First Christian Church of Kingsville was organized. Many of its charter members were employees of the town's new railroad, which tells you something right there about the kind of congregation this was going to be. Working people.
People who showed up. But here's where the story gets interesting. When the time came to actually build a church, the funds weren't there.
That's a problem as old as faith itself. And you might think that's where the story stalls. You'd be wrong.
The community responded with donations, and building began in 1913. Now, the structure standing today isn't that 1913 building. The present structure comes from a separate 1955 project, a later chapter written in brick and mortar.
But the congregation, that goes all the way back. And what this church lived through in between is something worth saying out loud. The Great Strike of 1922.
Two World Wars. The Great Depression. Most institutions crumble under one of those.
This congregation weathered all of them. And through every hard season, it kept reaching outward, through its women's groups, its language school, its food programs, all of it pointed at the same covenant the church has carried since that October day in 1911: to strengthen and heal the community while sharing God's gifts. Over a century of keeping that promise.
That's not a small thing. That's the whole thing.
What the marker says
ON OCT. 11, 1911, THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF KINGSVILLE WAS ORGANIZED, MANY OF ITS CHARTER MEMBERS BEING EMPLOYEES OF THE TOWN'S NEW RAILROAD. WHEN THERE WAS A LACK OF FUNDS TO CONSTRUCT A CHURCH, THE COMMUNITY RESPONDED WITH DONATIONS, ALLOWING BUILDING TO BEGIN IN 1913. THE PRESENT STRUCTURE, HOWEVER, IS FROM A SEPARATE 1955 PROJECT. OVER THE YEARS, THE CHURCH HAS WEATHERED THE GREAT STRIKE OF 1922, THE WORLD WARS, AND THE GREAT DEPRESSION. IT HAS DEDICATED MUCH TO THE PUBLIC THROUGH ITS WOMEN'S GROUPS, LANGUAGE SCHOOL, AND FOOD PROGRAMS, THEREBY FULFILLING ITS COVENANT TO STRENGTHEN AND HEAL THE COMMUNITY WHILE SHARING GOD'S GIFTS.
