Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the First Christian Church of Commerce, up in Hunt County. Now, some stories start with a single moment, a single person, a single spark. This one starts with families, plural, quietly putting down roots.

Back in the 1850s, a number of families from the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, settled in the Commerce area and began worshiping together. No building, no deed, no congregation on paper yet. Just people gathering in faith.

For decades that's how it went. Then came 1872, and the community purchased land from a man named William Jernigin and built a schoolhouse on it. Services moved inside.

A roof overhead, a little more permanence. Then in 1880, on Live Oak Street, a Union Church went up, and the faithful had a proper house of worship at last. But here's the thing about a congregation that's been worshiping together for thirty-some years without ever being formally organized.

At some point, someone's going to make it official. That moment came in November of 1890, during evangelistic services conducted by the Reverend A. C.

Henry. Right there, in the middle of those revival meetings, the Christian Church of Commerce was formally organized. The congregation didn't waste any time after that.

By 1891 they had purchased the property. By 1893 they had completed their very first church building on it. From families settling quietly in the 1850s to a building of their own by 1893, that is a long road walked with patience, and in the end, they got there.
